Tri-State Humane Society Fundraiser

The party this evening had many meanings. One, to celebrate our Independence Day, and to salute all of our Men and Women in uniform, past and present. Two, it was Rex's 50th birthday. Three,,it was 20 years ago today, that Doris and Rex met here at the flight park. Four,,it's Wills Wing Demo days. Five,,it's Saturday,, gesshh,lol.

I couldn't sleep, and enjoyed a pretty sunrise this morning. You can really see how many foothills there are in the valley on mornings like this.

I had company this morning while sitting on the deck. Looks like He needed some sleep still while He was having his breakfast.

Don't think I will ever forget this little guy. I arrived at a new cellphone tower to do work that night, and this little guys just jumped up, and snuggled right up in my arms, and didn't want me to work. Very loving, trusting new friend.

1st Lt. Bobby Woods was the Grand Marshall of Trenton's Christmas parade last night. He is a real American Hero. Google his name, and read what a special guy he is.
Chilly Willy was flying the glider ( single surface Raven), this year. Judy & Tyler carried the banner, while John Stokes drove it, Doris, Kid Dave Miller, Nancy, and Scott threw candy to the kids along the way.

The moon tonight at midnight
I was up at 6am, and the moon was setting. It looked liked what they call a Blood moon

Click on the pics to see them bigger. I was impressed the camera picked up so much detail.

I shot these across the valley to the sand mountain. I widened the shot a big to include some of the lights on the hillside, to show I didn't saturate the moon with any color. I did sharpen it a little, but no color was added. It was spooky looking. It would have been great for Halloween !

Thanks to all the volunteers that helped with the set up and break down & clean up !!!!

There was a great turn out for the annual Tennessee Tree Toppers Team Challenge again this year. They had what many would call a very successful competition. No injuries, no bent aluminum, and many personal bests. Hard to beat that. Below is just a few pics of the awards dinner, as I was unable to fly in the comp this year. Couldn't miss the awards dinner tho,, which is shown below.
This was the 1st place team this year.

A couple of friends that are as close as brothers, are doing an item on Sr.s bucket list - traveling cross-country with his Son, Rick Jr.. They are in Sr.s little sport car/rag top. How long will they be gone,,,,,, NO ONE knows for sure,, not even them. Which is the beautiful part of doing it this way. Below is just one of the emails that they've sent. The reason I'm even posting this one, is because I just happen to have Yosemite on my bucket list. Except, they didn't take a glider, or rent one,,,which is what is on my list of things to do. Fly Yosemite ! ! Hope you enjoy this part of their journey like I did. Rick Jr. tells it like it is, and it's almost like being there.

Lets see where did I leave off... I think my last report had us stopping at Bryce Canyon Utah for the night...
So our (my) original plan had been to go down through Las Vegas and then up through Death Valley and north to Yosemite. Dad was getting a little anci to get to San Fran I guess and changed the route to what appeared as a straight route across nothingness of Nevada and that is (wonderfully) exactly what it was. First though, lets get out of Utah and we'll get to Nevada. Remember this is a sports car road trip so we don't take no stinkin' freeways. We found route 14 (a thin black line) going across Dixie National Forest. Turned out to be a curvy road climbing a mountain and it was MY turn to drive! Southern Utah has a nice mix of red canyon and volcano, so we're climbing this huge mountain going through lava fields and up until we came into an Aspen Forest then we got to a little snow. This was a great sporty drive. On the downhill side of the mountain, we came to a huge limestone bluff and stopped for a pee and a picture. I loved southern Utah, very pretty and they have some water. Then came Nevada.
Remember I said it looked like we were going to cross nothingness? It was, and it was spectacular. Spectacular desolation. Big mountains separated by big valleys where you can see the next 20 or 30 miles of road. Sometimes you can even see the next car you'll pass, but it might take you 50 or 60 miles to catch em. And catch 'em we did. My big regret for this day is that I didn't reset the trip computer this morning so I didn't have our avg. mph for the day but I'm estimating it at about 80. Dad fell asleep at on point so I went ahead and took her up to 100 for a stretch (until he woke up with a "Is that really necessary?")(Yes, imperative) When I say desolate I mean it. We stopped and got gas about twenty miles into Nevada and other that two small clusters of houses and one store, there was nothing, absolutely nothing, but wide open space until one little town 40 miles from California. Dad took a turn driving for about 50 miles and got a little sleepy, so I got to do the cruise across Nevada. It was really impressive and we covered ground a lot faster than we could have on the interstate. At first I was cruising about 85 and would slow down a bit for on coming cars just in case. (It was 2 lane highway) Toward the end of the day we were cruising 95 and I was trying to convince dad that the car seemed to operated more efficiently at 5200 rpm. :) (It red lines at 9,000 for crying out loud). So any way we crossed a coupla hundred miles of nothingness by about 2:30 in the afternoon. As we got closer to the border we saw the highest mountain in Nevada (Boundary Peak), covered in snow. As soon as we crossed the border I had to relinquish control of the vehicle to Dad.
The roads got really sporty from here. Back to the curvy mountain stuff, even with some roller coaster up and downs in one stretch. No need for 6th gear here. We had entered California on a direct path for the east entrance of Yosemite National Park and we were taking hwy 120 through Tioga Pass. At one point there was snow falling and there was about three feet on the ground. Yosemite was beautiful, we stopped at a few places for photo ops. Heading west through the park we came to a sign that said San Fran to the right and Yosemite village to the left. Dad wanted to turn right! I made him turn left and down the winding mountain road we went. (I personally would have used one gear lower) Into Yosemite Valley and all of the big waterfalls, El Captain and a closer view of Half Dome. It was really breath taking. I ran the batteries down on both cameras. So we stayed until the sun went down and climbed back out of the valley and headed west for food and lodging. We'll we couldn't find any restaurants that were open so we had beef jerky for dinner and finally found a hotel for under $100 in Sonora, CA. Pretty spectacular day. 663 miles of beautiful.
That was our day for Friday. On Saturday we drove about 140 miles to San Fran to Dads sister Toni's house (and husband Tim). We'll hang here for a few days, do some laundry, wash and wax the car, site see, etc. From here we head north up the Pacific Coast Highway and more thin black lines.... See ya

It was also a fly day, but with company in from outta town, and the pickin' group coming,, I was unable to fly. The top of the lift was said to be about 3 grand over. It was a late day also, the real lift started about 3pm. Cooking for approximately 20+ people is a different undertaking for me. Glad that Mel & Rachal was there to help out !

I just wanted to get the day over with and go down to Smokey's. Sneaking a look at
my watch, I saw the time, 1655. Five minutes to go before the cemetery gates are
closed for the day. Full dress was hot in the August sun. Oklahoma summertime
was as bad as ever - the heat and humidity at the same level - both too high.
I saw the car pull into the drive, '69 or '70 model Cadillac Deville, looked factory-new.
It pulled into the parking lot at a snail's pace. An old woman got out so slow I thought
she was paralyzed; she had a cane and a sheaf of flowers--about four or five bunches as
best I could tell.
I couldn't help myself. The thought came unwanted, and left a slightly bitter taste: 'She's
going to spend an hour, and for this old soldier, my hip hurts like hell and I'm ready to get
out of here right now!' But for this day, my duty was to assist anyone coming in.
Kevin would lock the 'In' gate and if I could hurry the old biddy along, we might make it
to Smokey's in time.
I broke post attention. My hip made gritty noises when I took the first step and the pain
went up a notch. I must have made a real military sight: middle-aged man with a small
pot gut and half a limp, in marine full-dress uniform, which had lost its razor crease about
thirty minutes after I began the watch at the cemetery.
I stopped in front of her, halfway up the walk. She looked up at me with an old woman's
squint.
'Ma'am,may I assist you in any way?'
She took long enough to answer.
'Yes, son. Can you carry these flowers? I seem to be moving a tad slow these days.'
'My pleasure, ma'am.' Well, it wasn't too much of a lie.
She looked again. 'Marine, where were you stationed?'
Vietnam, ma'am. Ground-pounder. '69 to '71.'
She looked at me closer. 'Wounded in action, I see. Well done, Marine. I'll be as quick as I can.'
I lied a little bigger: 'No hurry, ma'am.'
She smiled and winked at me. 'Son, I'm 85-years-old and I can tell a lie from a long way off. Let's get
this done. Might be the last time I can do this. My name's Joanne Wieserman, and I've come to see
Marines and I'd like to see them one more time.'
'Yes, ma 'am. At your service.'
She headed for the World War I section, stopping at a stone. She picked one of the flowers out of my
arm and laid it on top of the stone. She murmured something I couldn't quite make out. The name on
the marble was Donald S. Davidson, USMC: France 1918.
She turned away and made a straight line for the World War II section, stopping at one stone. I saw a
tear slowly tracking its way down her cheek. She put a bunch on a stone; the name was
Stephen X. Davidson, USMC, 1943.
She went up the row a ways and laid another bunch on a stone, Stanley J. Wieserman, USMC, 1944.
She paused for a second. 'Two more, son, and we'll be done'
I almost didn't say anything, but, 'Yes, ma'am. Take your time.'
She looked confused. 'Where's the Vietnam section, son? I seem to have lost my way.'
I pointed with my chin. 'That way, ma'am.' 'Oh!' she chuckled quietly. 'Son, me and old age ain't too friendly.'
She headed down the walk I'd pointed at. She stopped at a couple of stones before she
found the ones she wanted. She placed a bunch on Larry Wieserman, USMC, 1968, and
the last on Darrel Wieserman, USMC, 1970. She stood there and murmured a few words
I still couldn't make out.

'OK, son, I'm finished. Get me back to my car and you can go home.'
Yes, ma'am. If I may ask, were those your kinfolk?'
She paused. 'Yes, Donald Davidson was my father, Stephen was my uncle, Stanley was my
husband, Larry and Darrel were our sons. All killed in action, all marines.'
She stopped. Whether she had finished, or couldn't finish, I don't know. She made her way
to her car, slowly and painfully.
I waited for a polite distance to come between us and then double-timed it over to Kevin,
waiting by the car.
'Get to the 'Out' gate quick. I have something I've got to do.'
Kevin started to say something, but saw the look I gave him. He broke the rules to get us
there down the service road. We beat her. She hadn't made it around the rotunda yet.
'Kevin, stand at attention next to the gatepost. Follow my lead.' I humped it across the
drive to the other post.
When the Cadillac came puttering around from the hedges and began the short straight
traverse to the gate, I called in my best gunny's voice: 'TehenHut! Present Haaaarms!'
I have to hand it to Kevin; he never blinked an eye - full dress attention and a salute that
would make his DI proud. She drove through that gate with two old worn-out soldiers
giving her a send-off she deserved, for service rendered to her country, and for knowing
duty, honor and sacrifice.
I am not sure, but I think I saw a salute returned from that Cadillac.
Instead of 'The End,' just think of 'Taps.'
As a final thought on my part, let me share a favorite prayer: 'Lord, keep our servicemen
and women safe, whether they serve at home or overseas. Hold them in your loving hands
and protect them as they protect us.'
Let's all keep those currently serving and those who have gone before in our thoughts.
They are the reason for the many freedoms we enjoy.
'In God We Trust.'

A good friend of mine graduated from High School this year. I've had the pleasure of knowing her and her family for about 15 years...most of her life,,,scary,,,I'm excited to see what life has in store for this young lady ! ! You may remember a year or so ago, a friend of mine son, joined the Marine Corp. He is almost a Corporal.

Obama's new Attorney General, Eric Holder, has already said this is one of his major issues. He does not believe the 2ndAmendment gives individuals the right to bear arms. This takes literally 2 clicks to complete. Please vote on this gun issue question with USA Today. It will only take a few seconds of your time. Then pass the link on to all the pro gun folks you know. Hopefully these results will be published later this month. This upcoming year will become critical for gun owners with the Supreme Court's accepting the District of Columbia case against the right for individuals to bear arms.
Here's what you need to do:

My budget is just over $4300. This is the main reason I am alone representing the United States. Not too many people can take unpaid leave from work after exhausting all vacation and digging into their non-existant personal funds to go. Some of you may have already purchased a T-shirt, and a few (awesome) people have simply donated some money to help offset some of my expenses. The Foundation for Free Flight has granted my registration fees, and USHPA has provided some free advertising for my fundraiser T-shirts. I don't really have a lot of creative ideas about how to raise funds besides selling some pretty awesome T-shirts, and in the past, it was pretty successful. This time around, however, I have just this week broken even on what I spent on producing the shirts. I do have a few opportunities coming up at the demo days and the comps in Florida to sell some more, but I'm beginning to panic and I'm certain I'll have to take out a personal loan to make this event happen. I know a lot of people are cutting back on non-essential expenditures, and I get that, but if you're not in a horrible financial mess like a lot of people are, please take a look at this page and see if you might want a shirt- for you, or your wife, or your teenage daughter (the girly camis are super cute- plus when is there a time when you can buy your S/O something hang gliding related at all???). Guess where I was working last night. Didn't even have the desire to go in and check them out. Progress rather than perfection !

On my way home, I was amazed by these two turkeys. They were as close to being tame, as I have ever seen.

I practically walked up to them. Makes me think that someone around there was feeding, or raising them.
I finally had to chase them away from the street. I admit, I "briefly" thought about bringing them home with me as,, mmm,, pets??? lol When the feeling passed, I chased them to safety.

The sunset tonight was pretty. I was expecting it to do something spectacular, the way the clouds were formed, but, alas,,,, just a pretty one. I'll take it, and be thankful for the sunshine we got to enjoy today.

Tomorrow is shaping up to be the nicest day of the year, thus far. It may be a fly day also ! I'm missing my jeep, big time . Hopefully, it will be ready next week.

Nancy had a birthday party, and every hang gliding pilot within 200 miles showed up, it seems. It's been a long, long, cold winter, and with spring just around the corner, everyone was itching to get together for any reason.

I'm in Laurel, Mississippi tonight due to the fact that all the cell towers didn't pass phase 2, and the work that needs to be done on them will have to be done by the night crew and tested tomorrow.
I just had an eye opening experience, that don't set well with me. Mainly, because of my ego, pride, or just call it what you will.
I left my hotel room on a quest to find something to eat for supper. The last time that I was here, I remembered eating at the Western Sizzler, and it was okay for some relatively inexpensive food, and it's all you can eat at the buffet. So, I come beeboppin' in, told the attractive young lady taking the money that I would have the buffet and a sweet tea. Tax and all was just over $8. I thought that was a dang good price for supper, especially when a big mac combo was almost that much, and went on in the dining area. I noticed right off that the place was pretty crowded, and that to me, that's a good sign. When the locals frequent an establishment, then most of the time, the food is good. I noticed something else. Most of the people in there reminded me of my Grandparents, or what grandparents are suppose to look like. Walkers, white hair, silver hair, sweat pants, ball caps, hearing aids, etc.... I found myself a table a little to the back, since I really enjoy watching people, so I could enjoy my meal, and have some entertainment as well. I like to imagine where people are from, what their lives had been like, what they had done for a vocation, etc....
This young lady approaches me, and asks what I would like to drink, and I tell her. Then, I said something to the effect of it being Geritol night?? Without a beat, she looked at my ticket and said, '" You got the Senior Discount, also Sir", smiled and went off to get my tea. I stood there, probably with my mouth hanging open at what she had just said.
O M G,,, my secret is out. Does everyone on the planet know I'm over 50???? Does AARP call everyone to let them know this kind of information??? My insides wanted to yell out,,,,But, I don't feel 50,,, why is this happening so soon?? I know life is like a roll of toilet paper, get faster the closer to the end, but come on. I didn't know if I should be offended, or flattered, or what.
So, I did the only thing that I could do,,,Sat down, ate supper, and was thankful for the $4 off of my meal. Just had to call my Dad,,,,He just laughed at me, told me to save my receipt, frame it as my first Senior Citizen's discount. My Dad's kind of brutal sometimes.
What I took away from this, more than anything, is a passage from the Bible. Judge not,,,lest ye be judged. I'm just learning all kind of lessons on this trip ! argg

Today was a very trying day for me. I got up early this morning, for me that is, at about 8:30am. I'm having real trouble sleeping now days. Yet I digress. I woke up to a winter wonderland, again. I had about 5 inches on the deck when I got up, and it was still coming down hard. My neighbor told me later that when it stopped snowing,,he measured it at 7 inches total for about 12 hours worth.
I had to head out to Mississippi, for work on Weds., so I headed out early. The roads were in great shape. The temp was over freezing, and I didn't encounter any slicks spots on the pavement(kinda slick in the ditch,tho). As I descended in altitude, the snow cover dissipated significantly. Road was totally clear. I was coming around the last sharp curve which is heading away from the mountain, and I see a long Fed-Ex truck leaving a house. It went the entire length of the drive way, and they never stopped or even looked out the passenger window. I was watching for the look, and the brake action,,,,it never came.

The drive way was right across from the mailboxes. I was very proud that I missed them. The driver pulled out and almost stopped, I can only surmise that she saw me in her rear view mirror and that I was heading in the ditch. She stopped where I did.

I was able to see another example of how people's thought patterns, and their essence are portrayed today. I'm not talking about all people's characters,, just this person's example.

When I was able to get out of my jeep, I didn't say anything at first, I was just shaking my head. She had gotten out of her vehicle, hands together checking on me. "I'm so, so sorry. I didn't see you. Are you okay?" I told her that I was fine, and asked about her. I then called 911, for real and not a test call, and gave them the information. The cops show up, get out of the car and they joking asked what happened. I jokingly said," just got run off the road". At this point, not 10 minutes later,, things started to change.

The lady has time to reflect on her situation, and in the company truck, loss of job, time,,,income,,etc... I'm sure that's what cause her to start in saying,, "I didn't run you off the road, etc.." I didn't say anything. I was just waiting on the State Police which was going to have to do the paperwork on the accident, I was told. The State Trooper showed up, and she made a beeline straight for him to give him her side of the story. When finished, he came over to me, and I said, she pulled out, didn't look, and you can see what happened. At which point, he went back to the cruiser to do his paperwork.

He came out, gave us our credentials, and told her to sign her citation for failure to yield. She started jumping up and down spouting off how this and that,,,until he told her to shut up, sign the paper,,, tracks in the snow doesn't lie. At which point,, she just signed and left me to my wreck & wrecker. I was told by David, at Collision repair in Trenton,,that the cost of repairs is going to be well over $4,000. I have a $1,000 deductable, to be able to afford the insurance, and they only pay 80% after that,,,so not a good situation.

There was a split second that I thought about plowing into the truck, out of anger, but then thought better of it,plus my luck, I would wind up in the hospital or worse, and thought I could pull off one of those Hollywood stunts --in and out of the ditch---flip her off, and continue with my day. As you can tell from the pictures,,,I'm not a stuntman from Hollywood. I just thought it was the correct action at the time. Just about halfway thru the ride in the ditch, the left side of the jeep got light, felt like it was coming up, and about to roll over. I believe, and like to think, that my Guardian Angels were on duty, and had a helping hand when it was needed. Also, they may have had a hand in making that woman stopped when it happened. Because, if she didn't it, it would have been tough to prove, my word - against hers. For I firmly believe, if she would have had time to think about it,,,,,she never would have. Lesson learned. PTL !

It's been a while since I've updated this, and I am sorry about that. I have been content to just post one liners on facebook, and have not devoted anytime to my writing. I really enjoy writing, and will start posting more, along with more of my pictures. I know there isn't a huge amount of people that look at this, but there are some. With warmer weather,,I will be putting more effort into it.
What's gotten me to this page again tonight,You might ask. It's the end of the Olympics.

First let me say,,,,,Thank You, Canada.

From the first Opening ceremony, until tonight's ending ceremony, a change has taken place within me, and a lot of us, I'm sure. I look at our neighbors to the north in an entirely different light. More than that, I look at a lot of different countries in a different way & attitude. The only difference between us--languages. Every one of those young men and woman had the same hopes,dreams, and goals.
Normally, I wouldn't have cheered for a young man in the moguls, to beat the USA. Well, I did, along with the world. Finally, a nation had it's first home gold. Why would we care, if he did or not? Basically, we got to know him & his special relationship with his brother. The sorrow, hurt, dedication, and most of all, the joy they shared after all of the work involved, paid off. We went behind the scenes that normally, we would never see. He opened up his world to us, holding nothing back, even his brother's disability.
I was touched by the opening ceremony. There was one of the scenes that touched my spirit. They took one of my dreams that I have had, and put music, words, and another person, and acted it out right in front of me. That young man flying really touched me. And, with the closing ceremony,,,being able to make fun of the misfortune of the Olympic flame stand not functioning correctly, and being able to laugh at yourself,,a true show of character. The director did wonders, and really touched us with his style. Fantastic job !
Joannie Rochette, and her courage that night on the ice, brought tears to the world. How could you not admire someone that opened up their pain of loss for their Mother. And then, honoring her, skated a performance of a life time, where the scores didn't matter to anyone. If there would have been an audience vote, a different person would have gotten the gold that night. I sincerely admire her, and hope that she gets some quiet time, away from the darn media, to heal. Pray for her healing ! It's not going to be easy, but in time,,it will get a little easier.
Then the other women's skater that performed better than any other ever has,,very touching performance.
The men's figure skating( a new oxymoron), proved that more doesn't mean it's always better.
Cheering on a young man Apolo Ohno, which broke all kinds of records.
A young long-red haired man, Shawn White, dazzles the world by his high flying snowboarding, and new stunts and tricks.
I had never watched a curling game before, but I came to appreciate it's strategy and skill.
Cheered for the guys that run--"The Night Train".
Felt sorrow during the Luge race.
I had never watched an entire hockey game. Hockey, isn't too big in the south. And, as bad as I hate to lose to another country, I was actually okay with the fact that Canada beat us. I wasn't too big on it anyway, since the players were darn PROFESSIONALS from the NHL. I didn't feel that's a Olympic team, but, that's just me.
Became a fan of Julie Mancuso, and not Linsey Vonn in women's snow skiing.
Felt sorry for a young Speed skater, when his coach mislead him to take the wrong lane, and cost him the gold medal.
Body Miller,,,,enough said !
Nordic combined,,,,moguls, aerials,alpine,super g, skeleton,ice dancing, curling, all new terms for me.
For a country that had never won a home gold,, they Kicked every one's hiney this year with 14 Gold Medals, and took home a total of 26 !
For the USA,, This year 9 golds, with a total of 37.
To say that our 2 countries have been really busy getting ready for the winter games, is a real understatement.
Every country brought home at least 1 medal this year. What a great showing !
All in all, over 16 days, we came to know these world class athletes, their home towns, families, likes/dislikes, trials, accomplishments, their life stories. The media took us into everyone of their lives, and in our own way, started cheering them on. I felt like I've known some of them all my life, and they are like life long friends. And, our borders mattered not ! The friendship that I felt during this time, with the wonderful people, will hard to beat in future Olympics. The friendship,courage and braveness of these people, know no bounds. I know that I'm not the only one that feels this because of all the "BOOOOs" when the games was announced offically,"Closed". There is no shortage of good role models for our young people.
I wish I could take one of those airbuses around during this time.
Admiration for the Mounties,and what they have to go thru. For all the Indian tribes embraced. The only thing that can beat the people of this country,,is the beauty of it.
And, as these ceremonies end, this is how I feel. I have a feeling of sadness, due to the completion of the games. And a coldness came over me, as the flame went out Weird, I know. It was a great emotional, and educational ride these 2 weeks. Some day, I would love to visit my friends to the north. O Canada,,,,,thank you.

I was in Lake Charles Parish this week working. The entire area was rich with the spanish moss, large live oak trees, trees growing over the roads, swamp, Baudoin ball and links, great food, and something I hadn't been around before,,,,some of the Wild life. Come to find out,,,alligators and crocodiles are everywhere.

I actually had to take a ferry to test a couple of towers. It was my first one to ever drive on, to be transported.

Really enjoyed this area. The biggest reason why I enjoyed it so much,,,the weather & wildlife. I've just had to go thru 2 weeks of frozen temps and here it was 81 degrees when I was heading home. The sunroof was back, and the windows were down, radio cranked,singing and acting a dummy, but who cares,,, there's crazy people all over the world,,,,glad to be in their company ! ! !

Osceola, the one-wing Bald Eagle, flys again. This is a clip from a few years ago. If you've never seen it,,,it really warms the heart of every animal lover. A hunter shot this eagle, and it lost a wing. John Stokes,S.O.A.R. south, takes it for a flight, which it would never get to do, otherwise.

Can you just imagine what she is thinking as they are flying? I imagine that it did her spirit a lot of good !

There has been some flying, but only by some of the polar bears, lol. Seriously, thought about it a couple of times, and even got dressed for it,, however, just couldn't put the glider on the jeep. Just don't like the cold that much just yet. I'm sure the need for some airtime will out weight the cold soon, tho'.

The high temps today was 24 degrees here on top of Lookout Mountain. I love flying, alot. However, John Cristoff loves it more. He was flying today. I'm going to have to see if I can't layer up enough to stand this cold. I saw some pictures from some of our friends to the north, with snow falling and covering the upper surface of the sail. Got to be a trick to it, OR they must be part polar bear?! lol

Your looking at my Christmas present. I was able to spend almost a whole week with my Dad. Something I haven't done in so many decades that I can't remember. I will, however, remember that week, until the end of my time on earth ! What a blessing. I was even able to go to Church with him. Priceless Christmas for me, thank you Lord !
We discussed the plan of action, and it was to take them to Wally world before I left town yesterday. They felt that they could handle everything from here on, by themselves. So, with much regrets, I headed home yesterday. Dad told me that I took all the fun out of going to Wally world, as he was not allowed to get out of the seat at all during the trip. Not even the gallon of milk ! Right after I took this shot, the race was on ! Ruth left him in the dust, with the slowwww wally world electric cart !

Dad sent me this shot today. Remember the much regrets? well, not any more. It seem that I left town exactly when I needed to. A snow storm has arrived, and promises to be around for over a week. I'm a southern boy, and this snow stuff~~~ ain't for me !

In eveyone's life, there are crosses that we all must bear. This is my Dad's ! A puppy, that is all that , and then some, even after being fixed this little girl only knows 1 speed~~ wide open ! precious little girl tho ~

The are keeping our country and it's people safe, during this holiday season, so that we can enjoy the privileges of freedoms that some countries in the world will never know.
My Dad is getting better everyday. We had to go get some things at Lowe's,, this was his trusty steed. So many horses associated with it, haha NOT.

Tonight was Lookout Mountain Flight parks Christmas dinner.
I grilled approximately 15 pounds of fresh salmon. I was told that everyone enjoyed it. I know that I did, with a little butter and lemon juice !

There was a lot of care packages and left over bags taken home. Some of the rolls and ham came home with me, for the long trip tomorrow to Ohio.

Saturday night was the Tennessee Tree Toppers Annual Christmas and Awards dinner.
This year is was held at a Great family restaurant in Dunlap, Tn. called, Johnson's B-B-Q, just south of town.

The lady on the right is the owner, and I promised her a spot in the post. She shut down the place to the public at 4:30 for the club. Her and her helper, took care of the entire gathering by themselves ! They have the best ribs I've eaten in a very long time. Chili's has nothing on these guys !

Eric Donaldson is the clubs' awards chairman, and seen here handing Steve Lee his award for the longest flight of the year. You know that it was a very slim year around here, when Steve's best flight all year is only 97.2 miles ! !

Ollie Gregory took the rigids longest, by flying a triangle,, I think James Stinnett landed in the same field, but Ollie tweaked out a little more distance. They both flew 65 miles, and shared the award.

Friday night was the 10th USA Dance's Annual Holiday Ball called: Home for the Holidays, and dedicated to the Men and Women in the Armed Forces.

Below is a Picture of Sgt. Paul Greene and his 5 year old daughter. Last month, a TV station asked her what she would like to have for Christmas, and she said a dance with her Daddy. Channel 3 made that happen, and he is in from Iraq on leave and is heading back out very shortly. Robert Gohr recorded the 3 minute section of news, and hopefully I'll be able to put it on here so you can enjoy it.

All the proceeds will be benefiting the Austin Hatcher Foundation. It is a foundation that supports children with pediatric cancer and their families. If you have a minute, please Google it, and see what a worthy cause it is.

This is the newest production of a very talented, and good hang glider pilot. He's already won a lot of contest this year, but this one will be his biggest. I hope some producer out there sees it !

I was in St. Francisville, Louisiana this week testing. The below pictures were taken at a park there. The park was closed, and doesn't open until springtime.
I can just imagine the beauty of this place when all the flowers,like azaleas, are in full bloom. It's pretty now, but in the spring, this place would be breath taking !

This tree was just spooky. The state of Louisiana is thick with traditions, culture, swamps, Cajun

food, and even voodoo. The imagination can run wild on the shape of this tree. What was even stranger, is that a thorn bush is growing out of the side of it. 2 species in the same spot. Weird. I was so far out in the boondocks, that if I was to fire my pistol,,, the deer wouldn't hear it .

The wirecrew & pilot was: John Stoke on the right wing, Pilot was Judy Hildebrand, Keith was keel, and Mary was in town, to help with the left wing. No altitude gain was reported. Nothing broken or bent is always a good day. She did reach for her chute once, but was able to get it back under control. Just kidding.

There was a break in the weather, just about sunset. I was lucky enough to catch it. Cloudbase was just a hundred feet over, and it was scarey warm. Almost like tornado weather. Winds are still honkin' up top.
I saw this in an email today, and realized how some people oh so reminds me of them.

Be careful when you ask some of the folks in the hang gliding community to do something for charity. I would have paid money to actually take this shot ! You really need to know these guys, to understand just how darn funny that it is !

They were for the Breast cancer Awareness fundraiser. I know they did well. The pictures below are of Thanksgiving dinner here at Lookout Mtn. Flight park. There was between 40-50 people that showed up to participate in the festivities.
This is going to be a little different post, as I was told that I don't write anymore on my blogspot, since I've gotten so involved with facebook. And, as bad as I hate to admit it,, they were right. So,,unless you needing something to bore you late at night, to help you to get to bed to sleep,,,,, fair warning.
This is going to be about some of the things that I'm grateful for. For example,, the little lady~Bella above. Her and Leanna, James and Dawns daughter are about the same age. I'm thankful for my hearing, and being able to hear them running around screaming and laughing, and reminding us of what we use to do when we were children. There is nothing on this planet, quite like the laughter of a child !

Above is a picture of the bonfire. I'm thankful for the friends that were there that night, that gave off more warmth than this fire could ever radiate! There are some friends that are closer to your heart than some relatives, and will live forever in your spirit. Those friends are in, what I affectionately call, my circle of life. For without true, life long Friends, and Family,,, you would have nothing. And, what a poor soul you would be. Money can not buy what they hold in their hearts. I'm thankful for the healthy, rich heart that I have. And very honored to be able to call them-- Friends.

I'm thankful for everyone of the calories on this table. And darn glad to just be able to feed myself. I have a couple of friends that would love to be able to do that very thing. Unencumbered by failing limbs, that just won't do what they want them to do anymore. I'm thankful for my eye sight, to be able to drink in the presentation that the ladies laid out on these tables.

I am thankful for the added wing loading of 23 pounds, that is a result of 2 major operations this year, accompanied by me quiting smoking in January. That just means that I'm healthy, and it's time to take this health thing to the next level. For example,,cutting out all the Cokes that I drink, more exercising, and just basically doing what the Dr.'s have told me to do. If I would do what I was told sometimes,, life would probably be a lot easier for me. Sometimes it takes a brick, to explain things to me, so that I understand them. Go figure.

I'm so very thankful for my sobriety. For, without it,,, I wouldn't be here. I thank the numerous friends that help me, sometimes on a daily basis, to battle the beast within. Most of the time, they don't even know that they are helping,,, but they are. And, they give it freely, and without hesitation, mental reservation, or restrictions. We are who we are, and what we are. As brutally honest, and gentle as we can be at the time.

I'm also thankful for my higher power, which is God, and Jesus Christ. He's got a birthday coming up,,,hope you remember it ! He and I, we be Mates !

I'm also thankful and proud of all of our service men and women, that fight on a daily basis, in our stead so we don't have to. No matter what you political views, you have to love those people. They are just doing whatever the Commander in Chief tells them to do. They have NO say so in the matter. And, most importantly,, they have Volunteered for this duty,,there's not a draft.

If you don't have any friends, or family to visit this holiday season do not sit in the house. You are desperately needed. There was a couple of years that I volunteered during the holiday season at a Missions, in Huntsville, Al. I would serve the food to the homeless and help out where ever they needed me at the time. I would also go to this Nursing home off the Parkway, and take soaps,shampoos, and other little things, and they would treat me like one of their family. Most didn't have families, or their families didn't care anymore, and wouldn't show up at all. Left and forgotten. Some of the looks on their faces, where like those of Bella and Leanna, with wondering and excitement. They didn't make as much noise, but it was still fun to do.

The most important thing in my life, that I am very thankful for, is that I still have my Dad. He lives in Ohio, which is a good piece away, but never Too far. He is in fairly good health, except his back, which he is having fixed. My Aunt, and cousins are a plus also.

I do hope, with all my heart,, that you are truly blessed this wonderful Holiday Season.

Yesterday was the first Flying Holiday Bazaar Festival, here at Lookout Mountain Flight park.

Below, is Barry Brown. His metal sculptures are enjoyed by a lot of us local pilots. We have them on our houses, and in our homes. The designs are plasma cut out of this thick metals, and then primed. If you would like more information,,please let me know, and I can hook you up with his email address. Very unique pieces. My piece, displayed above my garage door outside, has my last name, Helman, on it.

Gabriel and Tami had a massage booth set up, and provided some excellent service to a lot of people !

Mark Fink really impressed me with his paintings. He uses a Bee's wax and raw pigment technique. Really captured some pretty sights !

Claire's silk paintings speak for themselves. I wish I was rich ! I would have a lot more of her work in my house !

Lia is to be commended on the organization of this event. Very nice job. I do hope that we are able to have it again next year.

Chattanooga Dance Sport's showcase " Dreamscapes & Shadows", that got postponed last month, was rescheduled for yesterday afternoon.
Denny and Amanda really did an excellent job with this. The routines, and costumes were superb. Not only did Denny do most of the male leads, the last one that he did, shown below with Amanda, he had a bunch of lifts in them as well. Better man than me !

A friend of mine,Tom shown below, sent this email out today, trying to get the correct information to all of his friends at the same time. I'm sure that some will be left out of the loop, so when you get this, would you please copy and paste this in an email to all the people in the hang gliding community, and to all the Prayer Warriors that you know. This is a good man, and a great hang glider pilot, and it's a shame bad things happen to good people ! ! By His Stripes ! !

"This has been an amazing few weeks. I don't know who knows what, so let me summarize what's been going on.

It started with what I thought was a summer allergy. We had astronomically high pollen counts, so I thought the stuffy nose and occasional watery eye was just from that.

After the pollen count subsided, but the problem didn't, I checked with the local doctor who put me on antibiotics and decongestants, thinking it was an infection. After a month of medicines with no improvement, the dr saw something, 'I don't know what it is, but I don't like it.' An x-ray showed some dark mass in my sinus cavity. Not very pretty.

The first trip to the ear, nose and throat DR. was less than reassuring. Good chance that it's a cancerous tumor. But let's do some more screening to get a better look. Feeling down.

The better look (an MRI) showed a mass like a balloon inflating, not good considering it's parked against my brain, but based on the shape, there's a good chance it's not cancer.Feeling a bit 'up'.

In for surgery to have 'it' removed. Guess what. it is a rare cancer of the sinus cavity that occurs in 1 of a milliom people. That's why it didn't look like the typical cancer. This type of cancer shows the exact symptoms as a sinus infection, so the initial diagnosis would have been correct 999,999 times out of a million. Back to feeling down.
Then it's where to go for treatment, At first, the best available place was in Houston,but they can't see me until the end of November. So, Sloan-Kettering in NY now seems to have the nod, having an opening for an evaluation on Friday.

There is also a problem with my one eye, but that is pretty insignificant, all things considered.

So, 2 quick favors. First my family and close friends have all been through the 'up and down' series with me. If you are a prayer person, please send along a wish for hope and guidance for them. It's been a big strain on everyone. Second, there are alot of folks whose e-mail addresses I don't have. Feel free to forward this to an acquaintance whose address you have. I'd prefer that the correct info is out there instead of someone being misinformed. Thanks. "

I'm a tech, and know that it doesn't take that long to fix something that isn't broken to begin with. They've been doing a lot of that lately. Changing everything, and making it work, ha, less. If you go to their home page, and read their comments,,,you can tell that there's a lot of us not happy at all. Don't think that If I don't respond on facebook, that I'm mad or trying to tell you something by no replying,,,simply put,,, I can't get to it.

They really did a great job with this very difficult dance, and made it look easy. Immediately after this shot, Dan walked Amanda back to her card table, and sat down beside her. He then relaxed his legs, leaned back in the chair, and past from this world. Doing something that he absolutely loved to do. Without pain, or hesitation. If the Good Lord would give me a choice of how I was to go,, It would be after/during something that I loved to do and had a passion for. This was his final bow, and last curtain call. Rest in Peace, Dan.

What gets to me, is that the stats say that, 85% a Americans believe in God. Yet, we(as citizens of this great Nation), let them delegate what WE can put in our schools, and how we raise our students. Something wrong with that. It was Candy's, mmm,, 30TH birthday this week, so Doris got her a little cake. She didn't want anything big, rofl. Happy birthday, my friend. Many more to come ! ! ! ! !
It was also a fund raiser for The Dade County Mountain Rescue.

The flight park has been such a large contributor, that they even gave us special mention on the vehicle. You many have to click it to see the bigger picture.

Pilots' Wisdom:
1. Every takeoff is optional. Every landing is mandatory.
2. If you pull the bar in , the houses get bigger. If you push the bar out, they get smaller. That is, unless you keep pushing the bar all the way out, then they get bigger again.
3. Flying isn't dangerous. Crashing is what's dangerous.
4. It's always better to be down here wishing you were up there than up there wishing you were down here.
5. The ONLY time you have too much airspeed is when you misjudge your landing distance.
6. The propeller is just a big fan in front of the plane used to keep the pilot cool. Because when it stops, you can actually watch the pilot start sweating.
7. When in doubt, hold on to your altitude. No one has ever collided with the sky.
8. A 'good' landing is one from which you can walk away. A 'great' landing is one after which they can use the hang glider again.
9. Learn from the mistakes of others. You won't live long enough to make all of them yourself.
10. You know you've landed on the wheels, when that divet causes you to take a short nap.
11. The probability of survival is inversely proportional to the angle of arrival. Large angle of arrival, small probability of survival and vice-versa.
12. Never let your glider take you somewhere your brain didn't get to five minutes earlier.
13. Stay out of clouds. The silver lining everyone keeps talking about might be another glider or plane, going in the opposite direction. Reliable sources also report that mountains have been known to hide out in clouds.
14. Always try to keep the number of landings you make equal to the number of take offs you've made.
15. There are three simple rules for making a smooth landing. Unfortunately no one knows what they are.
16. You start with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.
17. Helicopters can't fly; they're just so ugly the earth repels them.
18. If all you can see is the ground that's going round and round and all you can hear is your own heartbeat, things are not at all as they should be.
19. In the ongoing battle between objects made of aluminum going very fast, and the ground going zero miles per hour, the ground has yet to lose.
20. Good judgment comes from experience. Unfortunately, experience usually comes from bad judgment.
21. It's always a good idea to keep the pointy end going forward as much as possible.
22. Keep looking around. There's always something you've missed.
23. Remember, gravity is not just a good idea. It's the law. And it's not subject to repeal.
24. The four most useless things to a pilot are the altitude above you, LZ behind you, gas back at the primary LZ, and a tenth of a second ago.
25. There are old pilots and there are bold pilots. There are, however, no old, bold pilots.

Please start the music, if you have speakers.

Everyday, we are getting older. However, the older that we get, the more commitments that we have. The more commitments that we have, the less time for "Self". I feel that is a very important part of the day, in order for us to retain our sanity.

To me, music is the very core of my existence. As is my hang gliding, and photography. It feeds and fills my spirit. As does a talk with my friend, Jesus. In times of loneliness, you have to remember,, you're really never alone. Unless you so chose to be. And the longing that you feel, can always be filled with some time with your favorite music. And, if you are totally alone, and have NO one to fill that desolate spot in your being, I have an idea for you. Especially, with the holidays fast approaching. When I lived in Huntsville, there was a Nursing Home that I visited around the Holiday season. In my travels, I saved all the unused shampoos, soaps, sugar,coffee packs, in the rooms that I didn't use. You should see those young at heart, but not quite as young in body folks, when you hand them some of this trivial stuff that we so easily discard.

I haven't set down since my recent breakup, and just listen to some peaceful easy music, and I have to admit,, loneliness is not for everyone. Slow down some, from you fast paced life for a few moments a day, and I believe that you will have a much more longer & happier life.

The wind direction today, took everyone to Whitwell's launch, since it's a SE facing site. It was really crossing out of the south today, which made getting off the mountain a little more precarious. But, eventually, everyone was able to safely launch.
I would say that 90% had to land in the primary LZ today. Some of the "A" pilots made it to goal. I didn't hear any kudos going out to any "C" pilots, so I would assume that most didn't go very far. It was switchy and a little strong in cycles. But, nothing but good landings were had by all.

If your NOT a carnivore,,,you can stop reading right here. Because the rest of this is dedicated to Jeff Wilson and his superb supper that he cooked and put together. Best cut of rib eye that I've had in many years ! !!

The conditions today where totally opposite from the last 2 days. It has been howling up here, over 25 mph. Today,,,the strongest cycle that I saw was about 5-6? and not a long one either. Very tough day, to say the least. Most took their sledders like a man/women and didn't complain,,,too much,, as they haven't gotten to fly much this week.

Tomorrow it may go to a southerly direction. If it does,,, we will be heading to Whitwell to fly from there.

The wind was blowing way too hard to be safe again today, which is to say it was blown out. There were more seminars, and great talks during the day,,but the news of the day, is the evening participation.
It was at Cancun Mexican Restaurant, in Chattanooga. Can you tell that they have some Serious margaritas?? Keith wasn't driving, so someone bought him one. Can you tell that he got a little tickled at it??

As I was driving up the mountain, heading to Henson's for the 2ND day of the Tennessee Tree Toppers Team Challenge '09, I wasn't for sure if anyone was going to be outside when I got there, or in a storm cellar somewhere. Fortunately,,this disturbance passed, and only left 30 mph winds ALL day, and into the night.
What happens at a hang gliding meet, when it isn't flyable. Seminars is what goes on! Priceless, vital information passes on to all that wanted to learn about what ever subject. Mike Barber started off with a pilots debriefing and discussion about yesterdays conditions and flying. Then, Ollie picked up with some pearls of knowledge, not to be missed.

Next on deck, after lunch, was Dennis Pagan. THE hang gliding GURU. Remember Yoda?? He's got nothing on this guy ! Bring it ! This afternoon, his seminar was about weather. Specifically, cloud suck & thunderstorms. When to play and when to Run Forest Run !

Next Seminar was about the instruments in which we use during flight. This one was targeted at our GPS. A pilots choice on instruments, are as varied as the rack systems that we build for our vehicles. All the pilots that wanted to learn about their particular GPS, broke into separate group by manufactures, and models. After the seminar,, a true test was put to 4-5 teams. A scavenger hunt for 5 items.

Steve Kroop will be pleased to hear that out of all of them,,, the Flytec 6030 team won. After all, they are the most expensive, they have got to be the best right ? Right, and we proved it! Of course, when you have Jeff Laughtery(shown below with the first item, a Pay Day), Dennis Pagan, Ollie Gregory, Tom Lanning on the same team,,,some might get the idea that it was a stacked deck. What did we win??? Bragging rights !

No, Dennis and Ollie are not doing some Italian or Russian dance below. They are giving the next seminar which was: Thermalling etiquette & procedures. When & how to join a gaggle of pilots in a thermal, direction, speed, mid-airs, etc... Since the Team Challenge is designed for the new or very low time XC pilots, it was demonstrated to make us all better at this delicate maneuver. This was a must for some, as they have never flown in a gaggle of other pilots before.

Have to admit tho,,,they do look good doing this ! And a beer would never be in a pilots hand while performing these type maneuvers !

The next 2 shots are 2 of the best that I've taken in a while. The wind was still honkin' at sunset! !

Everyone ran out to the ramp to see the space station go overhead. Fabulous site to watch ! !

I do hope that the wind calms down a bit for everyone tomorrow. All of us need some airtime! More importantly, you can't put into application anything that you've learned in the seminars, standing on the ground, looking up in the empty sky. More later !

Tonight was the last night of the annual Women's Fly-in Festival. There was catered baked chicken dinner, with all the trimmings, a keg, a band, a silent auction, and the awards ceremony.

Tomorrow night is going to be a blast. The night is starting off with a Round table seminar in the LZ featuring: Matt Taber, Mike Barber, Linda Salamone, and Steve Pearson.

THEN,, the food for the evening is: Soup & Judy Food sandwiches, with beer, and a bonfire. But, wait,,,that's not all. There's Open Mic Night. With our own "Kid Dave" MCing. But wait,,lol,,, there's also going to be a repeat performance from our own( do we have to claim them????) the Mongoettes. If you really want a great laugh,,look in my archives at this same event last year. Here's a secret inside tip---don't tell anyone tho !!!!! One of the Mongoettes called me this evening. They were in need of a---trench coat. Yup,,,should prove to be a face cramping, side splitting, rolling in the floor laughing, kind of night ! Come get some ! ! ! !

Roddy had a surprise birthday party tonight, at his home. He was late getting home, and what the surprising part was,,,we started without him ! He caught up pretty quick. Another surprise was a bunch of family members and friends were there that he didn't know about. Sure, there was a bunch of cars in his driveway,,,however, it wasn't just the usual hang gliding crowd !
As a professional photograhper, I've never been able to take 51 peoples pictures without getting some shadows. The solution~~ get upstairs to take the shot ! Surprisingly enough, only 1 person had her eyes closed. They will able to blow this one up to a 16 X20 or larger if they'll want to frame it.

Josh's daughter, Bella, is getting big, quick !

I've based this blog on honesty, information, motivational, spiritual, and humor, and a few other things.

The clip I've attached below, is by far the scariest & Stupidest thing that I have ever seen. The gene pool is not very deep here ! ! Stupidity is NO excuse.

I almost lost a couple of friends doing this sport, and they've known exactly what they were doing and was fully trained. This is not a funny clip, so don't think that it is. There's no gore in it, so it's just put here as a warning. The father should know not to do this with his son ! ! ! As they always say, and I find it very appropriate here, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.

I have a friend that expressed an interest in taking a tandem Hang gliding flight/lesson. Told them that I might be able to find someone to accommodate them. So,, they made a trip up to Lookout Mountain Flight park and had some fun.

Below, is a Youtube that Dawn's son put together. I went to high school with her, and we had only seen each other once since then, and that was just a couple of week ago, when they came to check the operation out.

Needless to say,,,,they had a great time. I did warn them about liking it tooo much. Which, if I haven't misread it, they did. Hope to see them on the training hill soon ! ! !

'Father of hang gliding' has died9/3/2009 7:19 p.m.

Francis Rogallo, known as "the father of hang gliding," dies Sept. 1 in Southern Shores. He was 97.
Rogallo, with his wife Gertrude, invented a "flexible wing" flier that was the precursor of personal flying machines like the hang glider, paraglider, ultralight aircraft and kiteboards.
He was born in Sanger, Calif., and graduated from Stanford with a degree in mechanical engineering and aeronautics.In 1963, NASA awarded Rogallo the highest cash award to date for his generosity of freely giving the government the use of his patents. He was inducted into the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame in 1987, and on May 11,1997, the NASA Langley Research Center recognized Rogallo "for many contributions to flight."
Rogallo is survived by his children, Marie "Bunny" R. Samuels, Robert S. Rogallo, Carol R. Sparks, and Frances R. MacEachren.
A funeral service is planned for Sept. 20 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Southern Shores.

Prior to the service, mourners can celebrate his legacy with a kiting and hang gliding fun fly at Jockey's Ridge State Park.

Here's an update for the Women's Fly-in this month, here at Lookout.

We just wanted to give you an update on the 2nd annual Women’s Hang Gliding Festival, September 24-27.
Last year the event was such a success and we expect that this year will be even better.

Thursday: registration with Lupi’s pizza (they cook them on site) and the band Gary Edmonson Trio. This night is free for registrants. All others pay $10

Friday: all day flying and at night we have open mic with Dave Miller. We will serve home made soups and sandwiches for $5

Saturday: all day flying and at night we have catered food and the band Lumbar 5, silent auction and the award ceremony for $10

Sunday: all day fun flying We are always in need of volunteers to help with the flying tasks.
